Widgetail

The value layer for the open web

Your content is worth more than a pageview.

Widgetail measures how much real value your content creates, not just how many people visit it. We're building a new way to turn that value into an economic signal.

Analytics is live. Value and monetization are being built now.

The problem

The pageview was never the real value.

A pageview tells you someone arrived. That's all it tells you.

It doesn't tell you:

  • whether they read the content
  • how much they consumed
  • whether they found it useful
  • whether they came back
  • whether the content actually mattered

Yet the web still leans heavily on traffic and pageviews to decide what content is worth. A metric that counts arrivals is standing in for value it can't see.

Widgetail measures what happens after the click.

  2. 02

    Measure real engagement.

Pageviews, unique sessions and scroll depth, from anonymous visits.

  3. 03

See what holds readers, not just what draws clicks.

And this is only the beginning.

A different model

From counting traffic to valuing content.

Today, revenue is tied to how many people showed up. We think it should follow how much the content mattered.

Today

  1. Traffic
  2. Pageviews
  3. Ads
  4. Revenue

The Widgetail model

  1. Traffic
  2. Engagement
  3. Content value
  4. New revenue opportunities

We're building toward this.

Content value

One score per page, and the signals behind it.

Every page is scored from how people actually read it, compared against pages with similar traffic. A small, deeply read guide can outrank a big, skimmed one.

The bigger opportunity

The web is changing. Its economics haven't caught up.

Web content is no longer read only by people. It is consumed by:

  • Humans
  • Search engines
  • AI systems
  • AI agents
  • Automated tools

If machines increasingly consume web content, how should the people creating that content participate in the economics?

Widgetail is exploring this problem.

Three economic opportunities

Three ways value could reach the people who make content.

Each one starts from the same measurement: real engagement, priced fairly.

AI agents

In development

When a machine reads valuable content, that content carries an economic signal, priced by what it is worth.

FAQ

Straight answers.

Including the ones where the answer is “we haven't decided yet.”

What is Widgetail?

Widgetail is the value layer for web content. Today it measures real engagement with your content: pageviews, unique sessions and scroll depth. We're building content value scoring and value-based monetization on top of that measurement.

See the product

Is Widgetail an analytics tool?

Analytics is the part that works today, and it's the foundation. But the goal is bigger than reporting what happened. Analytics tells you what happened; Widgetail is building toward telling you what it was worth, and connecting that value to revenue.

How the analytics work

What does Widgetail measure?

Today: pageviews, unique sessions and scroll depth (the furthest a visitor gets down a page), with traffic over time and top pages in the Console. The script also records coarse context such as device type, country and referrer domain. Reading behavior such as engaged time and bounce rate, and audience breakdowns like traffic sources, are being built.

Is Widgetail live?

Partly, and we'll say exactly which part. The measurement layer is live: pageviews, sessions, scroll depth and a dashboard. Content value scoring, value-based access for AI agents, an optional payment offer for ad-blocking visitors and advertiser signals are in development. None of those are available to use yet.

See the roadmap

What can I use today?

You can add one script tag to your site and see pageviews, unique sessions, scroll depth, traffic over time and top pages in the Console dashboard. Access is through the early-access list, so join it and we'll be in touch about getting set up.

What is content value?

Content value is how much a piece of content matters to the people who consume it: whether it was actually read, how deeply, and whether it earned real attention rather than just a page load. Widgetail is building a way to score it from real engagement.

Read the guide to content value

How does Widgetail differ from Google Analytics?

General-purpose analytics tools are built to report traffic: who came, from where, to which page. Widgetail is built around engagement per page, with the goal of scoring content value and connecting it to revenue. It's a single script tag, so it can run alongside whatever you use now. We're not claiming to replace a full traffic-analysis suite.

How will AI agents interact with Widgetail?

We're exploring how valuable content could carry an economic signal when machines access it, such as value-based pricing for AI agents and crawlers. Most agents don't run a page's JavaScript, so it would need a separate routing change at the edge, apart from the analytics script.

AI agents and websites

Will Widgetail replace advertising?

No. The goal is to add options, not to take advertising away. Ads still work for many sites. We're exploring additional ways for valuable content to earn: from machine access, from visitors who would rather not see ads, and from better engagement signals for advertisers.

Publisher monetization

Does Widgetail identify individual visitors?

No. The script uses an anonymous session ID generated in the browser that rotates on its own. Widgetail does not collect IP addresses or device fingerprints. Any future advertiser signal is designed to be aggregate-only.

Read the privacy page

How much does Widgetail cost?

Pricing hasn't been decided yet. We would rather say that than guess.

When will monetization features launch?

There is no launch date yet, and we won't announce dates we can't keep. The roadmap shows what's done, being built and planned for each stage, and joining early access is the way to hear as pieces ship.
