About

A pageview tells you someone arrived.

Widgetail exists because we think the web's most important number measures the least important thing.

Why we're building this

For a long time, the web has judged content by how many people showed up. A visit is easy to count, so it became the measure of success, and the basis for how content earns.

But a pageview says nothing about whether the content mattered. Meanwhile, the readers of the web are changing: visitors block ads, and machines read pages that no person ever opens. The old measure is becoming a worse proxy at the moment more depends on it.

Widgetail is our attempt at a better one: measure real engagement with content, understand the value that engagement represents, and then explore how that value could become an economic signal for the people who made the content. We call this the value layer for web content.

What we believe

  • Content has value beyond the visit that reached it.
  • The people who create valuable content should have more ways to be paid for it, not fewer.
  • Measurement should be honest about what it can and can't see, and private by design.
  • Ambitious ideas earn trust by being clear about what exists today.

How we handle honesty

Every big idea on this site comes with what is done, what is being built now and what is planned, and we move an item only when the work actually moves. You can check the current state at any time on the roadmap.

We don't publish customer counts, testimonials or revenue figures, because we have none to publish. When that changes, we'll share it. Numbers in product illustrations are labelled as illustrative.
